Open Minds Theatre Company (OMTC), since being founded in 2003 by Steve Rogers and Katherine Fletcher, has developed into a significant arts organisation delivering workshops, performance and arts projects across a wide variety of art forms.
We are passionate about the transformative power of the arts and are firmly committed to the impact that the arts can have upon the regeneration of the region. Whilst OMTC is firmly embedded in the Rotherham community, we work, predominantly, throughout the North of England.
We work in the community to assist in the developing and equipping of people to lead effective and fulfilled lives by improving their confidence, self-esteem, understanding of others and themselves, communication skills and self-discipline through their exposure to, and involvement in, the arts.
We also work with different groups of disadvantaged people in the community and we are committed to using performance, drama and other art forms as a means of opening peoples’ minds and combating bigotry and prejudice.
Open Minds Theatre Company was founded by Steve Rogers and Katherine Fletcher to fill a significant gap in Rotherham which, at the time, had no professional theatre company.
Initially we worked largely with disaffected young people as part of school’s re-engagement programme but quite quickly diversified, setting up two youth theatres and the Thursday night group, a group of adults who specialised in producing performances of challenging plays, providing in-service training for teachers and gaining contracts to provide after school activities in schools.
In the first year we received our first Arts Council grant which was to start The Kashmir Project, a unique trilogy of plays telling the story of the Kashmiri community in Rotherham based on the real life stories of members of the community.
An organisational development grant from the Arts Council in 2006 allowed us to establish a firm base and expand considerably. From there, the Company took off and worked throughout South Yorkshire and, at times, beyond, providing workshops in a wide variety of art forms in schools and community organisations, performance, training, managing and delivering arts projects and festivals.
In the summer of 2016, Kat Fletcher left OMTC to take up a position with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shortly afterwards, Alice Bartlett joined the company as Associate Director and Craig Roberts joined as Company Manager. Alice has worked with a wide variety of theatre companies in the past (including West Yorkshire Playhouse, Hull Truck, and Harrogate Theatre) and is an accomplished writer and director. Craig has been a musician all his life and has many years’ experience in Education and Youth Work.
We now begin a new chapter in the company’s story…
